The optimal time to receive the flu vaccine is from mid-April to ensure peak protection during the influenza season, which typically spans June to September. However, vaccination at any time during the flu season can still provide valuable protection.
💉Who Is Eligible for a Free Flu Vaccine?
- Under the National Immunisation Program (NIP), the following groups are eligible for a free flu vaccine:
- Children aged 6 months to under 5 years
- Pregnant women (at any stage of pregnancy)
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over
- People aged 65 years and over
- Individuals aged 6 months and over with medical conditions that increase their risk of severe influenza, such as:
- Chronic respiratory conditions (e.g., severe asthma)
- Cardiac disease
- Diabetes
- Chronic neurological conditions
- Immunocompromising conditions
- Chronic kidney or liver diseases
- Haematological disorders
- Children aged 5 to 10 years on long-term aspirin therapy
